I have always been a firm believer in being inspired and affected by the space around me. We decorate our house to make it feel like a warm nest, our workspace to make us smile.
I love it when my surroundings are pretty and inspiring to get into great headspace. When preparing for a big meeting or just getting ready for a date night, I like to light a candle and put on some good music to get me into the right groove.
Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, so a beautiful space to glam yourself up in while getting ready can do so much not only for the pictures but just to make you feel absolutely amazing.
Now a days, you have so many more options to choose from than we had a generation ago.
Whether it's a pretty hotel room or an Air BnB, or the Bridal Suite of your Venue, make a conscious decision on where you will get ready for your big day. A beautiful space will create a marvelous mindset and inspiration, as well as put you in a great mood and set the mood. Lights, Camera, Action!
Big Windows and lots of light will not only put you in a good mood but also helps your Hair and Makeup Artist to do better work. If you look at my portfolio, you’ll likely choose shots in which the bride (and everything else) is bathed in soft, bright light.
Lots of light will be wonderful for your make up artist, and you will see how your face looks in sunlight, vs. indoor lighting. Additionally, your photographer will love you. Vitamin C can brighten up any day!
While both the HMUA and the photographer can use artificial light, nothing beats natural light!
Gimme Space!
A perfect getting ready location will have enough space to set up your makeup and hair artist in an area separate from where you'd like your photos taken.
When researching places, try to visualize a separate area where everyone's stuff, food + knick knacks can be tucked away in. Remember that you and your bridesmaids will most likely have a bunch of things like bags, clothes, their dresses, and knick-knacks - is there a place where all this can be tucked away in? You'll want to keep clutter out of the main space and keep things from getting too crowded.
If you have a separate area for food and beverages, it is even better – particularly to avoid any accidental spills or messes.

A nice outdoor area is always a plus. It gives us a moment to get some bridal portraits as well as photos with your girls out of the way before the day begins.
